Television Review: Torchwood: Miracle Day (Day 2)

I watched the second episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day and unfortunately I am once again underwhelmed. I love the underlying principle of Torchwood, and government conspiracy, and American’s being brash; but the slow pace of this episode, despite a few harried moments, was not up to par with its potential.

Everything goes to the pits when Jack, who is not mortal, suffers from mortality. Eve Myles, who plays Gwen Cooper, was the one shining bright spot in the episode. She reacts exactly the way I wish she would react, with passion, cunning, and a good dose of humanity. She is the reason I’ve stuck with Torchwood even as it went to five episode seasons (though supposedly this season will have 10 episodes), even though  I much preferred the format of the first two seasons of alien hunting. I keep hoping that John Barrowman will be given more depth of character to portray, but the writers continue to caricature-ize Captain Jack Harkness. I will keep watching the season, in hopes that the plot moves beyond set-up and explosions to heart, humanity, and some decent story telling.
